Sheriff Reflects on Year Without County Jail (12/12/2013)

Jail Closes December 19, 2012...

Sheriff's Office To Be Occupied Periodically Starting March 14, 2013
March 13, 2013

Beginning Thursday, March 14, 2013, the Livingston County Sheriff's office will only periodically be occupied by the sheriff and/or deputies. The complete countywide law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical dispatching services will be done from within the Chillicothe Police Department at 613 Walnut Street. "The unfortunate side of this is no one will be here to answer the telephone calls and foot traffic which comes into our office," said Sheriff Steve Cox. "As much as we dislike automated answering services, we have no choice but to have this at the LCSO.""

When no one is in the building to answer the telephone, the caller will be directed to hang-up and dial 911 for an emergency, or basically to select a voice mailbox to leave a message for a specific employee. If callers need a deputy dispatched for non-emergency matters, they are asked to call the Chillicothe Police Department dispatcher at 660-646-2121.

All doors of the sheriff's office will be locked if the building is unoccupied by the sheriff or a deputy. A sign on the front door will direct visitors to call the above number or report to the Chillicothe Police Department dispatch to report their needs.

"Please share with your family, friends, and neighbors to place the above information to help expedite any need for emergency medical, fire, or law enforcement services anywhere within Livingston County," Cox said. The sheriff expressed appreciation for the public's understanding and assistance. "This is the best we can do with the options we currently have available to all of us," he said.

Sheriff's Office Website is Resource Information Center for Public

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office has launched a new website where residents can find the latest information regarding the operations of the sheriff's office as well as locate area sex offenders. The website will serve as an information resource for the public and assist with community policing efforts, according to Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox. The website, www.livcoso.org, provides updated information on all aspects of the sheriff's office.

One of the main goals of the new website is to provide information to the public about sex offenders living in the county. The interactive map feature on the website allows the public to view sex offender locations on a map as well as view offender photos and profile information about the offenses committed. Site visitors can also click on a list of the offender's names to view their profile information. "The safety of county residents is our primary concern at the sheriff's office," Cox said. "We feel the sex offender website map feature allows us to better-protect county residents by keeping them informed."

In addition to the interactive sex offender map, the website also features press releases, messages from the sheriff which are updated frequently, pages on the services of each division of the sheriff's office, as well as a link to submit crime tips via email.

Other features of the website include:

  • Most wanted listings - allows the public to view photos and descriptions of wanted individuals.
  • History of the sheriffs - allows the office to share photographs and biographies of former sheriffs with the community. "Our hope is to work with our historical society and the families within our communities to provide facts about our county's law enforcement history," Cox said. "We invite and encourage anyone with historical information to please contact the sheriff's office."
  • Alert notifications - allows the public to sign up for alert notifications from the sheriff's office via email or text - including sex offender notifications, press releases, messages from the sheriff, and most wanted updates.
  • Social Media Links - allows the public to follow the sheriff's office on Facebook.

Coming in spring, the office plans to expand the website by adding the following features:

  • Jail Roster - allows the public to view photos and information for individuals booked into the detention center and/or released within the last 48 hours.
  • Warrants - provides current information and photos of those with outstanding warrants. We welcome the community's help in locating these individuals.
